A comparison is made between the display types used in the manual VTS system (plan position radar indicators) and the automatic system (interactive graphics displays). Factors affecting operator efficiency in performing the following tasks based on radar-derived data are treated: detection, identification and tracking, and traffic analysis or interpretation. The background analysis in the automatic system, which provided operator alerts such as lane stray or collision warning, is also considered. It is concluded that in vessel traffic systems that use radar for anything beyond an occasional monitor of traffic conditions the automatic system and displays have important advantages. (Author)
