An indepth interview with Roald Zinnurovich Sagdeyev on space research by PRIRODA correspondent N. D. Morozovaya is presented. Sagdeyev, an academician, is a specialist in the field of plasma physics and space research, chairman of the Soviet Scientists' Peace Committee, hero of Socialist Labor, recipient of the Lenin and State prizes, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Royal Academy, the Max Planck Society and a number of other academies. He headed up the USSR Academy of Sciences' Space Research Institute for more than 15 years. He shares his views on Soviet space missions, policies and Mars mission plans.
