With the recent advances made in the technology of material and dynamic design, the synthesis and analysis of a passive controller to cause an entry vehicle to perform a certain function is becoming a subject of increased interest. An approach to the analysis of this class of problems through the use of optimization techniques, is presented. Two entry problems are considered. The first problem is concerned with determining the control that allows a vehicle of fixed configuration to obtain maximum velocity for a specified terminal range angle, altitude, and flight path angle. The second problem considered is that of determining the control that causes the vehicle to follow a trajectory such that the signal-to-noise ratio of a radar situated abroad the entry vehicle is maximum during entry.
