An understanding of the possibilities and limitations of Kalman filters when used as algorithms in a target tracking air traffic system is being considered. A recapitulation of pre-requisites and theoretical treatment is followed by a description of an experimental filter and its performance. The results show that the Kalman filter is a generic and powerful aid, which will very likely play a significant part in future air surveillance and guidance systems. (Author)
