This report presents human factors engineering standards for use by naval architects and marine engineers, ship outfitters, owners, operators, and bridge equipment manufacturers. The standards were developed from U.S. research and international criteria on bridge design; discussions with shipyards and marine architects; and information on bridge manning from shipping companies, labor organizations, maritime schools, and masters. The standards are intended to fill the gap in design guidance between construction specifications and general human factors engineering documents.
