The report presents results of an automatic transcribed pilot report (PIREP) system fabricated at the National Aviation Facilities EXPERIMENTAL Center (NAFEC). The system used an off-the-shelf endless loop tape recorder which was integrated in the Flight Service Station/Very High Frequency Omnirange configuration at selected sites. Live operational tests were accomplished to determine equipment deficiencies and operational suitability for consideration of expanding the PIREP concepts to other sites. From the operational tests, the concept was not adopted because of pilot apathy to transmitting PIREPS.
