Modern ship propulsion systems have become increasingly complex. This is particularly the case with steam turbine machinery. To assist the marine engineer in improving his knowledge of various aspects of steam plant operation and in obtaining the necessary experience in dealing with off-design conditions, in particular with those situations where failures and malfunctions occur, special training courses have been developed. During these courses a simulator may be used as a training tool. The Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) operates such an 'Engine Room Simulator'.
