Survivability, capability, maintainability, and reliability will establish the effectiveness of a combat aircraft. Considerations for the 'ilities' must take place during the conceptual design phase. Retrofit of survivability enhancement has historically increased weight, drag, and cost, while decreasing capability and performance. Proper application of the six susceptibilty reduction concepts and the six vulnerability reduction concepts must take place before the design is established to maximize effectiveness and minimize penalties. In this thesis, the application of survivability enhancement techniques to the conceptual design is presented in general and also specifically applied to the design of a long range Strike Fighter aircraft. General guidelines for susceptibility and vulnerability reduction for any aircraft are also presented. (Author)
