TRBs Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2214 includes 18 papers that explore critical factors for development of airport cities, heterogeneity in preferences of air travel itinerary in a low-frequency market, addressing and benchmarking variations in airport demand in the U.S. domestic market, using Smeeds Law to estimate number of bird strikes in Utah, and the effect of disruptions on U.S. domestic airline industry service quality and market share. This issue of the TRR also examines the impact of introducing scheduled flights on aviation markets; application of complex network theory and genetic algorithm in airline route networks; modeling and forecasting passenger demand for a new domestic airport with limited data; measuring quality of service in airport passenger terminals; simple sensors used for measuring service times and counting pedestrians; and capacity, delay, and schedule reliability at major airports in Europe and the United States. In addition, TRR 2214 highlights the economic and institutional impacts of introduction of self-separation concept of operations in air traffic management, critical flights detected with time windows, assessing the impact of stochastic capacity variation on coordinated air traffic flow management, airborne laser survey specifications and quality management protocols for airport obstruction surveys, computation of aircraft braking distances, experience of European air traffic management related to the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland, impacts and responses of Icelandic aviation to the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption.
