This report explains the collision of Union Pacific freight trains MKSNP-01 and ZSEME-29 near Delia, Kansas, on July 2, 2997. One crewmember was killed, and 1 crewmember sustained minor injuries as a result of this accident. Damages related to the accident exceeded $5.1 million. From its investigation of this accident, the Safety Board identified safety issues in the following areas: the MKSNP-01 engineer's performance, the Union Pacific Railroad's fatigue education program, crew resource management, and positive train separation control systems.
