The cost, schedule, performance, and status of the following NASA programs are assessed by the General Accountng Office: Galileo mission to Jupiter; Ulysses mission to the sun, a joint project with the European Space Agency (ESA); Magellan mission to Venus; and Mars Observer mission. The causes and impacts of project delays are discussed. Separate reports provide more detailed descriptions of each mission. The purpose of these deep space missions is to improve scientific knowledge of our solar system and selected planets in it.
