Several accidents in towing operations of barges or disabled ships in restricted and open waters have made necessary the investigation of the course keeping stability of towed vessels. In current practice several mechanisms for improving the course keeping stability and consequently, reducing the danger of collision, capsizing and towline breaking have been devised. Specifically, chains may be towed behind the vessel; stabilizing skegs may be added; the towline length, stiffness, and its point of attachment on the towed vessel may be changed; or other devices may be used to increase the system stability and safety. These methods, however, may not produce the desired effect and may, besides reducing the economic efficiency of the system, reduce its safety as well. In this work, the results of sophisticated modelling, mathematical analysis and computer simulations are presented and used to explain the effects of the system configuration, the environment and the methods used in practice on the towing system safety and economic operation. It is shown that, unless the effects of the currently used practical techniques are properly analyzed for a specific system in a given environment, they may have an adverse effect on the safe and economic operation of the system. Computer codes developed in this work can be used for proper analysis of such practical techniques.
