Detailed examination of five types of underground locomotive was undertaken and eleven others were considered, with the aim of devising guidelines to ensure that new locomotive design satisfies ergonomic principles as far as possible. Observations of the operation of the locomotives were made and drivers were asked to assess various aspects of their use. Ergonomic problems were outlined and discussed; criteria for new standardized designs were listed. Specific guidelines were given for future design taking into account the practicalities of locomotive operation.
