The Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) II consists of three volumes which are related to the safety analysis of the Ulysses mission: Volume 1, Reference Design Document (RDD); Volume 2, Accident Model Document (AMD); and Volume 3, Nuclear Risk Analysis Document (NRAD). An Executive Summary pertaining to Volumes 1 and 2 is also provided. Volume 1, this document, provides the background design information required to understand the analyses presented in Volumes 2 and 3. It contains descriptions of the RTG, the Ulysses spacecraft, the Space Shuttle, the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS), the Payload Assist Module --- Special (PAM-S), the trajectory and flight characteristics including flight contingency modes, and the launch site. There are two appendices in Volume 1 which provide detailed material properties for the RTG. 19 refs., 117 figs., 19 tabs.
