As part of an effort by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials to develop interest nationwide in formulating a new surface transportation program for the 1990's and beyond, TRB conducted the Conference on Long-Term Trends and Requirements for the Nation's Highway and Public Transit Systems. Resource papers were commissioned on topics that included economic growth and vitality, energy and environment, commercial freight transportation, personal mobility, and new technology and communications. This special report contains an overview of the conference by three observers; the keynote address given by Robert M. White, president of the National Academy of Engineering; the complete resource papers; and summaries of comments by the respondents.
