A conceptual analysis and review of human factors problems in piloting VTOL aircraft including helicopters is presented. VTOL mission and flight requirements are contrasted with those of CTOLs. Deficiencies in present VTOL flight instrumentation are detailed. The requirement that information regarding ground-referenced and airmass-referenced position in all six degrees of freedom be presented to the VTOL pilot and/or incorporated into positional control stabilization is stated.
