Diagnostic tests of the effects of mounting an inlet on the side of a fuselage and under a wing were conducted in a wind tunnel. Full-scale engine tests were conducted to investigate the effects of inlet turbulence on a turbojet. Tests conducted in an altitude facility, which incorporated a choked venturi to provide turbulence, showed that inlet turbulence reduced the engine stall margin. Wind-tunnel tests of an underwing inlet, including the inlet control system, showed the effects of inlet unstart on the stability and control characteristics of a supersonic aircraft. The effect of inlet unstart is a major design parameter in the placement of the propulsion system. (Author)
