The circumstances surrounding wrong-way driving on freeways and expressways in California are described. Data concerning wrong-way driving incidents observed during three separate 9-month periods were furnished by traffic enforcement officers and used in these studies. The effectiveness of preventive measures installed on freeways and expressways as a result of previous studies was tested using the before and after study method. Both the incidents of wrong-way driving and wrong-way driving accidents were used in these before and after studies. In addition 168 wrong-way drivers were interviewed and biographical data is presented. The relative safety (as far as wrong-way driving is concerned) of various types of off-ramps has been measured and average rates of wrong-way entry are given. (BPR abstract)
