Using the basic system design and the diesel plant prototype developed under MarAd Contract 5-38042 and inputs from ship operators, the steam-turbine plant prototype system was developed and installed on the LASH TURKIYE. The system is comprised of a program of preventive maintenance actions for the engineering plant, lighter crane, and deck machinery together with management aids for planning, scheduling, and recording maintenance; reporting casualties and repairs; requesting shore work; and maintaining inventory control of spare parts. The 18-month evaluation period on the LASH TURKIYE was interrupted by a series of layups, lighter crane casualties, and a change in trade routes which limited system operation and data collection. Results from other Prudential Lines, Inc. ships having the same system in operation were used to expand the data base for analysis. Positive benefits of system operation included reductions in out-of-service periods and breakdowns, fewer requests for shore repairs, more efficient operation of engineering systems and improved ship-shore staff communications and work request processing. There was insufficient data to establish cost benefits.
