This report summarized the use of 3M-TM Lighted Guidance Tube (LGT) at the Pali Highway hairpin curve site and at the westbound H-1 Freeway off ramp to the Honolulu International Airport site to delineate the change in alignment of the road for the motorist to adjust speed and maneuver through the hazardous sections. The LGT required high maintenance in areas where climatic conditions include strong winds and frequent rainfall. Installation and maintenance under these conditions tend to contaminate the inside of the tube, which will reduce its effectiveness. However, its use proved effective in reducing accidents especially on wet pavements. The LGT is no longer marketed by 3M but replaced with Scotchlite-TM Linear Delineation System consisting of highly reflective sheeting with aluminum backing formed in a corrugated fashion, which is a low cost, low maintenance system.
