The evolution of hydraulic servocommand systems in civil aeronautics applications is briefly reviewed, leading to a functional overview of the Airbus hydraulic equipment. Taking the A300B hydraulics as an example, the design philisophy is reviewed, and the monitoring of hydraulic equipment is explained. Various control surfaces operated hydraulically are then discussed. The principal subsystems, i.e., landing gear, front wheel steering, and brakes, are also described. Safety features are analyzed, and possibilities for extending hydraulics applications, e.g., stability control, wing profile control, are reported.
