High-temperature burning with excess oxygen has proved to be a pavement marking removal system which allows a rapid flash burning of pavement markings with minimal motorist recognition and little or no pavement surface deterioration. This pavement marking removal system, however, does leave the burned residue (of the pavement marking) on the roadway surface. This document discusses the design, operational, and safety requirements for high-temperature burning and residue removal procedures.
