The importance of psychology of children in traffic as a particular area of study by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory rests on the belief that from observations and investigations of the behavior of children interacting with vehicles will come information which can be used to improve their safety. The TRRL program of research, summarized in this paper, includes co-operative studies with the police and other bodies as well as research funded at universities. In addition to the classes of study given above, the program also includes studies of children's understanding of road safety and the development of teaching aids to be used in road safety education.
