Strength requirements of U. S. Army litter/patient retention systems as set forth in current military specifications were analyzed. The analysis was made in light of U. S. Army aircraft accident experience, the human tolerance to abrupt accelerations, and the forces and accelerations that may be anticipated in accidents involving litter-bearing military aircraft. The analysis revealed that the strength requirements quoted in current military specifications are considerably lower than (1) the upper limits of acceleration that can be tolerated by airborne litter occupants and (2) the typical forces and accelerations that are incurred in military aircraft accidents. These conclusions indicated that current litter systems would fail under relatively moderate impact conditions and would thus subject the litter patient to amplified accelerations and increased contact injuries. The existing litter system was analyzed in detail to determine if minor modifications could be made to achieve a vertical load-carrying capability of 20G. Since this strength was not attainable, an experimental litter system designed for a 20G vertical and 25G longitudinal capability was developed. (Author)
