The application of a slotted corrugated metal pipe drain in some areas subject to occasional wheel loads is beneficial to effective drainage design. The ability of an 18-inch diameter slotted pipe to carry legal wheel loads is investigated in this project. Also, the development and performance of slotted corrugated metal pipe drains as used on California highways are discussed. Both 14-gage and 16-gage corrugated metal pipe, 18 inches in diameter, were investigated. Based upon pipe deflection data under heavy wheel loads, the slotted drain pipe fabricated to standards specified in California Standard Plans, January, 1971, with proper backfilling is capable of carrying occasional legal highway wheel loads.
