In a joint effort with the Maritime Administration, the City of Tacoma has conducted a series of tests on its two new Surface Effect Ships. The tests that were conducted were grouped into two types: tests related to the crafts missions and tests to verify the performance of the craft. Until these tests were performed certain information about the performance of the craft had been unavailable, e.g., turning radii. The mission and craft tests included simulated fire response, simulated rescue, maneuvering, firefighting equipment, shoreside water supply, craft tow test, craft speed performance, craft turning performance, acceleration/deceleration performance, craft wake characteristics, craft speed/sea characteristics and craft static stability.
