To determine whether rear-view silhouette models of deer with raised tails would be effective in keeping deer off planted interstate highway rights-of-way, such models were tested in four experiments along Interstate 80 in Centre County, PA. Results of counts of deer in experimental and control areas obtained from a moving vehicle or examination of tracks through gaps under the fence revealed that the models were ineffective as deterrents to deer gaining access to the right-of-way. It is not recommended that they be used to reduce vehicle-deer collisions.
