Equipment used to load cargo on aircraft is critical to the mission effectiveness of the military airlift system. GAO evaluated whether existing equipment could effectively support wartime airlift operations. The report discusses: reduced airlift capability caused by unreliable equipment used with wide-body aircraft; the potential for using commercially owned equipment in lieu of procurement to meet wartime requirements; and the lack of spare parts to maintain equipment during wartime.
