The Nordic Method for calculating Traffic Noise was established around 1978, and is widely used in Norway. However, this method is very time consuming and laborious, although semi-automatic methods (i.e. simple pc-programs) have been developed. In order to improve this situation and also to minimize the risks of unskilled use, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Directorate of Public Roads (NPRA), decided to develop an automated computer version based on digital terrain model applications. The system called TSTOY is primarily intended for use within the Public Roads organization, but will also be released on a commercial basis.
