The hallmark of engineering has always have creative, inventive design. This paper presents a series of innovative designs and inventions that has led to the solution of many aerospace vibration and shock problems through damping techniques. In particular, the design of damped airborne structures has presented a need for such creative innovation. The primary concern has been to discover just what concepts were necessary for good structural damping. Once these concepts were determined and converted into basic principles, the design of hardware followed. (Author)
