Acrylics do mar and craze, and the maintenance of quality surfaces was and is a challenged problem. With the development of cushioned abrasives in 1960, a promising repair system evolved, and in 1969 and 1970 the Military introduced the RS-69 repair kit and Mil-Spec 58091-A. Training programs at Ft. Rucker and other bases showed the way to extended life and reduced life cycle costs of aircraft transparencies. The process was adopted by all manufacturers of aircraft acrylics in the U.S. and aboard. Airlines were quick to realize the value of line maintenance to restore cabin or cockpit windows in place. Northrup Corporation in 1978 collaborated in the design of a new kit, the NC-78-1, which may become the new military kit, replacing the outdated RS-69. Air rework facilities are conducting seminars to upgrade the skill levels at their installations, and the aviation technical schools of the country are all teaching acrylic maintenance using cushioned abrasives.
