This thesis examines the domestic commercial satellite options available for telecommunication and remote sensing services. The study provides a single source, comprehensive examination of the available commercial U.S. geosynchronous telecommunications satellites as well as the remote sensing spacecraft which may be utilized for commercial purposes. A general satellite communications technology overview is provided as background material for the more detailed satellite compendium. The following telecommunications operators are included with their respective domestic communications satellites: Alascom, Alpha Lyracom Pan American, ATT, Comsat, GE Americom, GTE Spacenet, Hughes and Intelsat. Satellite evolution, overview, key design features, and performance parameters are catalogued. Additionally, each satellite's communications payload is examined in detail. Emerging technologies in the remote sensing field are presented. The current GOES and NOAA satellite systems are surveyed with an emphasis on each satellite's capabilities and operational status.
