Road weather information systems (RWIS) are field-based sensors capable of continuously recording road weather events. The purpose of the sensors is to avoid transportation managers and the traveling public by providing real-time weather and road conditions accessible via the Internet. Roadway managers are able to use this information to assist with deployment of snow removal equipment and abrasive applications. The traveling public is able to use this information to decide whether roadway conditions are safe for travel.
