The report analyzes the relation between the movement rate at Washington National Airport and the delay which is caused to arriving and departing aircraft and the consequences of such delays. It is based on data for the week of November 13-19, 1967. The first analysis may be considered as an empirical counterpart to the queueing models developed by Airborne Instruments Laboratories. The variable, however, is the average delay to arriving or departing aircraft. The statistical results provide estimates of the effect of additional carrier and general aviation aircraft movements on delays. Results were sufficiently consistent to permit the estimation of quantities important in the economic analysis of airport utilization. The second, exploratory, part of the analysis considers delays more from a system point of view, i.e. taking into account tardiness at other cities on the itinerary due to the initial delay.
