The purpose of this paper was to determine if the Soviet MIR space station represents a significant advance when compared to the Soviets preceding Salyut 7 space station. A description and comparison of the physical features of Salyut 7 and MIR are presented. A discussion and analysis of the scientific, commercial, military and political uses or missions of the Salyut 7 and MIR space stations are included. The MIR space station is determined to be a significant advance relative to the Salyut 7 space station.
