The current fiscal year's effort in the Helicopter Technology Program was directed toward the development of a design methodology for helicopter fuselages. Effort was concentrated in the development and utilization of computer programs to design a fuselage for a high speed helicopter in the 25,000 pound gross weight class. Particular emphasis was placed on minimizing flow separation in the rotor hub-pylon region of the vehicle. The flow separation in this region was previously determined to be the cause of up to fifty percent of current helicopter drag. Measureable success has been achieved in this regard. Progress has also been made in the development of a comprehensive wind tunnel investigation (currently under way) to verify analytical predictions and further refine the design methodology being developed.
