The Danish Ministry of Energy has sponsored an investigation by the Danish Technical Information Service of the present situation of el-driven vechicles and of the probable future development within the year 2000 horizon. El-powered cars have the advantage of fossil-fuel saving, lack of pollution and relatively longer motor-life, while their drawbacks are: temporary high price compared to the mass-produced traditional cars, battery weight, and capacity, the highways are not adjusted to el-powered traffic. The progress in battery research, hybrid electric and combustion engines and electronic control will probably give an el-powered vehicle adequate in such services as the mail-transport, city transport and similar. The costs of battery charging would be reasonable at off-peak el-power prices, while the tax-system has to be adjusted to el-powered vehicles. The prognoses of el-vehicle share in the total vehicle number in nineties differ from under 8% for cars to about 11% for buses in various countries.
