The problems associated with fault isolation maintenance in Army aviation were investigated. The investigation included a detailed engineering analysis of historical maintenance data on the CH-54 helicopter and surveys of selected Army field activities throughout the United States. The investigation confirmed that fault isolation maintenance is a significant factor in the cost of operating Army helicopters. The most frequent criticism voiced by Army personnel in the field concerns the generally poor quality of troubleshooting data in current aircraft maintenance publications. In response to this problem, an improved approach to the development of fault isolation maintenance data for complex systems was developed. Called FIAT (Fault Isolation Analysis Technique), the proposed approach greatly facilitates the identification of symptom/cause relationships and the collection, processing and organization of data required for the preparation of maintenance manuals.
