The behavior of motorists overtaking slow moving vehicles is examined. The subject is restricted to overtaking on straight and level two-way, two-lane roads. The main result is that the speed and type of the oncoming vehicle have no detectable influence on the maneuver. A short comparison is made between the overtaking of fast moving vehicles and the overtaking of slow moving vehicles. It turns out that the critical gap in overtaking a slow vehicle is smaller and the overtaking time bigger compared with that when a car travelling at ordinary speeds is overtaken. A tentative explanation for the result is that all drivers overtake a slow moving vehicle and only a subpopulation overtakes other cars on a two-lane rural road.
