A concept of a self-contained hover position sensor and obstacle clearing device is derived by a stabilized mirror in pitch and roll. The mirror is set at an angle in front of a night vision system to provide the pilot with both adequate terrain presentation beneath as well as in front of the aircraft. This technique referred to as Stabilized Terrain Optical Position Sensor (STOPS) was enhanced by the superposition of displayed symbology with increasing information content conveying quantitative information. The concept was evaluated in a man-machine hybrid simulation. The results indicate that Hover Position accuracies of less than 5-feet RMS can be obtained by utilizing position information derived by STOPS and symbology representing ground velocity and acceleration.
