The automatic check gate stops the flow of water in an irrigation ditch after the lapse of a predetermined time. A float is mounted to the gate and provided with a valve for admitting water at a controlled rate whereby the float loses its buoyancy and sinks in a predetermined time to close the gate. When the ditch is emptied, the water in the float runs out through the valve and the gate is again ready for another irrigation cycle.
