The Downtown Loop is proposed as a multi-lane, divided, controlled access facility. This freeway, in combination with other proposed future freeways, would provide a means of rapid exit from the central city in the event of a national emergency. Right of way conflicts with public use lands will be limited to one instance. A baseball park between the Reedy River and Mayberry Street is in the path of the proposed freeway. Construction of this facility would require the relocation of approximately 550 families, 40 businesses, 2 churches, and no active schools. This number of relocations is unavoidable due to the nature of the facility and the corridor through which it is to be constructed. Concentrations of traffic noise and exhaust pollutants will be unavoidable due to the concentration of motor vehicles utilizing the facility. The land required for right of way will be lost for other use and removed from the tax structure of the local government.
