An automated highway system includes a spectrum of technologies, ranging from intelligent vehicles that can notify drivers of unsafe situations to technologies that assume full control of driving tasks. This report provides information on (1) the potential benefits and drawbacks of implementing a fully automated highway system and (2) DOT's proposed changes to the Automated Highway System program and the implications of these changes.
