Tires fitted with metal studs to imporve traction and resistance to skidding on snow or ice are becoming more common. This report compares the advantages to be gained from the use of studded tires with the increased wear of the road surface. Few studded tires are used at present in the United Kingdom, but experimental work in U. S. A., Germany and Sweden shows that they can cause a high rate of wear of road surface. Studded tires give better grip than ordinary tires on ice but have little advantage on snow. Chains are more effective on both ice and snow. (Author)
