The prominence of space science and technology in Canada is in a very large measure the result of the reseach efforts that went into the development of the Alouette 1 spacecraft which was launched for ionospheric studies in 1962. The history and accomplishments of the Canadian space program are reviewed with emphasis on the Alouette-isis Program, the Hermes Program, and cooperation in NASA's LANDSAT and SEASAT Programs. Scientific objectives of the various programs, construction of the remote manipulator for space shuttle, and social benefits of Canadian space technology are covered.
