It appears that useful results can be obtained from a polar orbiting satellite in the detection of the SST structure associated with the oceanic polar front in the Drake Passage. Daily as well as seasonal changes in the cloud cover were the greatest limiting factors in this study. Some improvement could be realized in the detection of cloud-free ocean areas by decreasing the time interval between successive satellite observations. Presently, a single satellite is capable of viewing the same ocean area every 12 h. The use of multiple satellites, at properly spaced time intervals, could increase the sampling rate even further. Present plans to improve future environmental satellites may make these possibilities a reality for ocean scientists.
