Cormstar-I A, the first in a series of COMSAT domestic communications satellites, will be launched by an Atlas-Centaur (AC-38) launch vehicle from Cape Kennedy, Florida, by NASA no earlier than May 13, 1976. The launch support for this mission will be provided by NASA, on a fully reimbursable basis, to COMSAT General Corporation, a subsidiary of the Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT). The Comstar spacecmft will be leased by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) as part of a nationwide communications network. Each Comstar spacecraft will have a capacity for more than 14,000 two-way high quality voice circuits. Three Comstars are planned for the system and when operational will be capable of providing reliable communications to the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. A fourth satellite being built for this program will serve as a spare.
