An experimental evaluation was performed to determine differences, if any, between the DATOM and SIMM technical manuals when used as a sonar equipment maintenance aid. The experiment was structured to require solution of thirteen maintenance problems varying in difficulty, performed on sonars for which preliminary DATOM and final SIMM technical manuals exist. The experimental data allowed comparison of Navy sonar technician trainee performance in time-to-solution and in correct determination of intentionally faulted sonar subassemblies, while using the respective technical manuals as an aid.
