Three trial installations of rumble ares to specifications developed by TRRL have been made and their effect on vehicle movements and driver behaviour assessed. The trial sites were all on A class roads and were on approaches to (1) a roundabout, (2) a bend and (3) a signal controlled crossroads. Small reductions in average vehicle speeds were observed and there were more marked reductions in the proportion of vehicles travelling at high speeds. Most drivers appeared to recognise the rumble areas as an intended warning device. The results were consideration to justify further trial installations at other sites.
