The analytical part of an extensive damage tolerance evaluation of the fighter aircraft 37 Viggen is presented. The complementing experimental investigation is discussed in the companion paper. Topics addressed include load spectra, stress analysis, fracture mechanics and fatigue crack propagation. The following conclusions are made: the methodology used is verified and is state of the art; damage tolerance is analytically proven and experimentally demonstrated; extension of the original design life is currently being considered.
